Radiation
Presented by
Carlin Saldanha, ND, MPH
Radiation is an insidious and invisible environmental toxin, which can lead to devastating health effects to the exposed and unprotected. Radiation Exposure is becoming difficult to avoid- and as such- an everyday reality of modern life.
We are ALL exposed to significant levels of radiation every day. Common sources include cell/ mobile phones, computers, wireless technology, flying in an aircraft, medical imaging, food irradiation, security devices, environmental (sun) radiation and household microwaves- just to name a few.
There are many types of radiation and radioactive emissions. The four most common types: alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and x rays.
Cancer is considered the primary health disaster from radiation exposure. Damage occurring at the DNA level, can disrupt the control processes, permitting the uncontrolled growth of cells-cancer. This is why ionizing radiation's ability to break chemical bonds in atoms and molecules makes it such a potent carcinogen.
There is increasing evidence that it can lead to damage to DNA, broken and misshapen chromosomes, mutated genes and early cell death, that it adversely affects the egg, sperm and embryo, and is implicated in fertility problem, miscarriage and birth defects.
In 'acute' exposure, such as the recent Japanese nuclear disaster, 'radiation poisoning' is known to cause premature aging, thyroid disease or even death. If the dose is fatal, death usually occurs within two months. The symptoms of radiation sickness include: nausea, weakness, hair loss, skin burns or diminished organ function.
There is no firm basis for setting a "safe" level of exposure to radiation, which is worrying, to say the least. Many sources emit radiation that is well below natural background levels.
