It is currently estimated that more than 1200 species of bacteria, yeast and other organisms numbering 100 trillion in total inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract and make up the "gut flora". In an average adult the bacteria weigh about 2kg (4-5 pounds) and the number of individual organisms outnumbers the total number of cells in the human body. Our Intestinal Zoo is critically important part of our immune and neurological health.

It is well medically recognition that intestinal flora have a major impact on human health first developed with the birth of microbiology in the late nineteenth century.

It is generally accepted that our relationship with indigenous gut flora are beneficial. Metchinkoff popularized the idea of "Dys-symbiosis, or Dysbiosis," a state of living with intestinal flora that has harmful effects. He postulated that toxic amines produced by bacterial putrefaction of food were the cause of degenerative diseases and auto immune diseases, and that ingestion of fermented foods containing Lactobacilli could prolong life by decreasing gut putrefaction.

Dysbiosis is multifactor in etiology and associated with antibiotic and drug ingestion; hormones ingestion; stress; diet and alcohol intake. A modern mans disaster.
